MISS SAIGON

Drury Lane Theatre, London

September 1990 - February (or March) 1991 (Alternate)*

December 1993 - April 1994 (Principal)*

Role: Chris, a U.S. Marine

In Cameron Mackintosh's production of Miss Saigon, John first played Chris as Alternate to Simon Bowman, in selected performances from September 1990 to February (or March) 1991 and then returned as Principal in 1993.

Miss Saigon is a modern retelling of the Puccini opera, Madame Butterfly, with the location moved from Japan to Vietnam in the mid-1970s during the final days of the Vietnam War.

The story centres on Chris, an American Marine serving at the US Embassy in Saigon and Kim, a young Vietnamese woman who has fallen on hard times and is forced to work in a Saigon brothel.

Chris and Kim fall in love, but are separated after the fall of Saigon and the US evacuation, to be briefly reunited in Bangkok - where Kim discovers that Chris has married and Chris learns that he has a son.
